If you are interested in using botanical features to accurately identify palms by their family, genus and species, then this book is excellent. The book begins with a dichotomous key that is essential for field identification. It has indexes by scientific name and common name, and it has a pronunciation guide right before the index. There are a few species and varieties that were recently introduced to Florida that aren't in this book, but it is still my go-to book getting the record straight on palm identification. The book only includes true palms, so you will not find plants that are often confused with palms like cycads (sago), traveler's palm, cardboard plant and bird of paradise.
Bought this for my brother who has a home in Naples and wants to learn all the different palm trees.
I like the book, but it is out of date. If it were up-to-date i think it would deserve 5 stars.The bulk of the book follows a standard format: a general description of a genus of palms popular in South Florida followed by a detailed description and drawing (sketch) for each species in that genus. I like this format and it works well for identifying specific palms and for general learning about the various palms.The book was written first published in 1973 and a lot has changed since then. It's true that the palms are the same, and in that respect the books can still be useful. However, the botanical names for many, if not most, of the palms have changed. To make the book useful, you really need to write up a cheat sheet to translate the old and new names. Also, many more palms are popular or available in South Florida today than 40 years ago, so many of the palms one would like to know about are simple not included in this book. Also, there are several typos in the text that appears on the sketches.
While an excellent and detailed explanation of the confusing world of palm botany, I have two problems with this book. 1) It contains comprehensive, detailed drawings of the trees reviewed, but not a single photo! Of course it costs a publisher more to use the type of paper that color can print on, not to mention the ink itself, but a garden book with no photographs at all?? 2) It would be most helpful for us beginners if the pronunciation and the derivation of the botanic names was listed. It's hard to remember a plants proper name when you cannot even pronounce it!
I was looking for "illustrations" to be clear and identifiable. this is for a serious gardener, not for a neophyte looking to understand the palm varieties.

Competent, descriptive accounts of Florida's plants are scarce. This work is affordable, competent and descriptive. Pictures are limited to B&W drawings, which are sufficient for identification.
