Let me start by staying that I own several books by this author and have generally been very satisfied with his work, particularly surrounding the interaction between railroads and the industries that they serve. I rank him among my favorites when it comes to authors for the real and model railroad subjects. When I found out that a new book on the automobile industry was coming out from this author, I was pretty excited and preordered a copy.After receiving the copy, however, I was disappointed. In my opinion, the book should have been titled "How Railroads Have Moved Automobiles", in which case it would have been very fitting and well received. There was a lot of space devoted to automobile boxcars from the 1920's up through the 1960's and autoracks from the 1960's to present. The information on these railroad cars was interesting and would have been a good accompaniment to the book if more space had been devoted to the actual industry.The book contained only one chapter on automobile plants, with half of that space taken up with a history lesson on the comings and goings of automotive brands through the first half of the 20th century. There were only a few pictures of automobile assembly and automobile part manufacturing plants, including one picture that was labeled "1923 at a Ford plant" but was clearly a modern photograph (possibly from a scene recreation at the Henry Ford Museum). All the rest of the space in the book was dedicated to how railroads move automobiles, including a chapter that I completely skipped over on how trucks & trailers have been used to move automobiles, which was again information that I felt didn't pertain strongly enough to a railroading book to garner its own chapter.Based off other books on railroad industries that I've read by this author, I was hoping to see some track plans or description of prototype operations or some feel for the railroad traffic (by car type, commodity and car quantity) going into an automobile plant. None of this information was present in this book.Aside from the misleading title and the lack of content that I was interested in, I was very disappointed in the style of the writing. The information was repetitive and made multiple uses of "As described in [this other place]" type statements. I own a few real and model railroading books by other authors that use that writing style, and I won't buy books that they author because I don't like that style. None of my other books by this author have used that style, so I was surprised to see such a departure from his normal style. In fact, I kept going back to the cover to convince myself that I was actually reading a book by this author and not by a different author.In my opinion, even the sections on the railroad cars didn't have the kind of information that I thought I would see. For example, the very interesting chapter on high cube boxcars had a sidebar talking about different types of cushioning used. No pictures or graphics, just some vague wording. I don't really understand the differences between the two systems described now any better than I did before reading the book. Also, I've known for some time that modern enclosed autorack train cars are actually flatcars with racks on them, but none of my fundamental questions regarding rack design or manufacture or securing mechanisms to the flatcar or ownership arrangement were discussed in this book.In summary, if you are interested in a book with lots of pictures of automobiles in boxcars and on autoracks and don't mind repetitive information, this might be a good book for you. If you are interested in how railroads interact with the US automobile industry, this book is probably not what you at looking for.
