#6,630 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

UPDATED 11/03/16: This identical title (50 MASTERPIECES YOU HAVE TO READ BEFORE YOU DIE) was previously used by both GOLDEN DEER CLASSICS and CENTAUR CLASSICS until Centaur wisely changed its name to a more distinguished (and distinguishable) one: THE CENTAUR COLLECTION OF 50 LITERARY MASTERPIECES. The two sets differ in significant ways as explained in this review for the GOLDEN DEER edition.Almost every work included in this huge Golden Deer collection (of 369,767 Kindle location numbers) rates 5-stars individually, but whether or not this particular selection of them agrees with the 50 you or I might have chosen is open to debate. For instance, as much as I GREATLY enjoy reading Arthur Machen, objectively speaking I do not feel the story included here, THE GREAT GOD PAN (nor ANY of his fantastic stories, for that matter), rightly ranks among the very limited number -- in this instance only 50 -- of truly great works of literature ever written that one MUST read before one dies. Obviously any such selection out of the many hundreds (dare one say "thousands") of possibilities is very subjective, and I am sure that (unlike me) some readers could not possibly imagine Machen NOT being included.Be that as it may, Golden Deer appropriated the title 50 MASTERPIECES YOU HAVE TO READ BEFORE YOU DIE from Centaur and retained 42 of its chosen works, but it replaced eight others (identified at the end of this review in the ADDENDUM). It also oddly and inconveniently arranged its choice of 50 books by authors' FIRST names. When informed of this gaffe, Golden Deer swiftly re-issued it with a more logical and pleasing LAST name arrangement. Kudos to the publisher for responding so quickly. But readers interested in this set should compare its contents to the one from Centaur (now re-titled THE CENTAUR COLLECTION OF 50 LITERARY MASTERPIECES) to determine which they prefer. Happily, the Kindle Store blurb for each lists their full contents (and, as I previously mentioned, I have indicated the differences in the ADDENDUM, below) .Although every public domain work within this collection can easily be obtained individually as a freebie in the Kindle Store (and from other online venues), a bundle like this does offer the convenience of one search and one download rather than 50 searches and 50 downloads. Afterward, all 50 can be easily and handily accessed in one location on your Kindle (or other e-reader). But that assumes there is an active TOC. This has no TOC, active or otherwise -- but on my Kindle Paperwhite, by pressing the GO TO "button," an active listing of all titles appears. Hopefully, that will occur on your e-reader, as well. (Otherwise, you should pass on this set.) FYI: The Centaur edition HAS an active TOC.Anyone who loves great literature and who has owned a Kindle for any length of time probably has already downloaded most of these titles, so this may not be a vital acquisition. It is still an appealing one, however, especially since the works are handsomely formatted and paragraphs are distinguished by traditional indention (my preference) rather than spacing. Those new to using an e-reader will find this an easy way to instantly download a virtual library of appealing literature. (Ditto for the Centaur edition.)Be aware, however, that in the case of foreign-language works, you must accept (sight unseen) these particular translations (good, bad, or indifferent). For example, many translations of Homer's ILIAD and ODYSSEY exist, some very good and others quite miserable. This uses Samuel Butler's translation, very good except that he frequently (and annoyingly) uses Roman names instead of Greek. Tolstoy's WAR AND PEACE also has had numerous translators. This one is an old, but very good, Tolstoy-endorsed one by Louise and Alymer Maude (which I happen to prefer over others). Dante's DIVINE COMEDY is translated by Longfellow. These and other translations (clearly identified on the title-page of most works) may not appeal to you as much as those of your own choosing -- though I do feel sound choices were made in most instances from among those public domain translations currently available. (The above holds true for the Centaur collection.)Italics (often used by an author for emphasis) do not always appear in these works, a defect which many readers will remain blissfully ignorant of but those in-the-know will bemoan. By way of example, WAR AND PEACE omits all italics. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE uses italics, and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA uses all caps in lieu of italics. Other books in this bundle may also use them, or omit them, or use all caps instead. (This holds true for the Centaur edition as well.)All things considered, this is a more than satisfactory collection and whether free or inexpensive, it delivers all 50 works as promised. But downloading this bundle is only the first step; its value (and true enjoyment factor) is in actually reading it -- ALL of it, even (and ESPECIALLY) the ones new to you or which you might not otherwise have chosen on your own. The prospect of DISCOVERY is the real benefit of a large set like this, and that's what makes 50 MASTERPIECES YOU HAVE TO READ BEFORE YOU DIE especially desirable (despite -- in my opinion -- the undesirability of its off-putting, flippant, and hyperbolic title). But I would still rate it 5-stars contingent upon the direct accessibility of its content on your particular e-reader; if no such provision exists, it would drop to 1-star.ADDENDUM: Of 50 works in the two, previously same-titled sets from Centaur and Golden Deer, 42 of them are common to both. Of the remaining 8, the CENTAUR edition (since re-titled) contains these works that the Golden Deer edition does not: Stories by Hans Christian Andersen, THE ENCHANTED APRIL (by Arnim), THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, TRISTRAM SHANDY, ULYSSES, THE RAINBOW (D.H. Lawrence), AGE OF INNOCENCE, and GERMINAL. Conversely, the GOLDEN DEER edition omits the above 8 titles and replaces them with these 8 that the Centaur edition does not have: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, GREAT GOD PAN (Machen), THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, FRANKENSTEIN, THE ART OF WAR, and DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE.After Centaur's name change, two of its 8 also changed; it dropped MRS. DALLOWAY and TO THE LIGHTHOUSE to add THE ENCHANTED APRIL and THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (as indicated above). Disappointingly, neither set now contains anything by Virginia Woolf.FYI: At least two additional Golden Deer volumes follow this one. Stay healthy since you now HAVE TO live long enough to read 150 books instead of just 50.UPDATE: 10/15/17: Many bundles with titles identical to or similar to this one have since been published by a number of ebook publishers. The content and formatting quality vary, but all are slow downloads and memory usurpers. Choose wisely from among them -- or simply use their Kindle Store title lists to download the specific individual books you wish to read (when you wish to read them, rather than all at once) as public domain freebies.

No way to find separate books within the single compilation. I would not buy this again nor recommend it.

There is no table of content to access; therefore, you must read the books in consecutive order. It is very frustrating especially if you previously read some of the books. However, here's an easy suggestion to get around this obstacle:1. Amazon's website will note: "This book contains the following works arranged alphabetically by authors last names" click on "read more"2. Copy and paste this list somewhere convenient such as on your Kindle, iPad, reading device or simply print it out.3. Within the book search the last name of the author on your device, voila the book appears. In addition to the TOC missing, some of the books chapter numbers are also missing. I would probably give the book 4 stars; however, I can forgive these glitches since the contents are so enjoyable and the book is free.

An excellent selection of classics well worth the 2 cents per novel.I just bought this 1/24/17 downloaded to the cloud and it included a "Table of Contents" by story name only. (I don't know if it matters, but I'm reading it with the Kindle Reader from a computer.) From the Amazon description I copied and pasted the titles with author's names following them, and pasted them onto the "Contents" as an added note. This also seems very handy for dating when you have started a book and maybe a short thought about it. . .

A very fine collection of classics and a great buy for the money. Some of the classics that I have not read are included here and that is why I purchased. Since the scope of all these books is too broad to go into, they presentation and index seem complete and easy to use. I like Kindle anthologies and collections. So portable, so readable, so inexpensive for the quality and quantity of the works you receive.

This is one of the best literature purchases I have ever made. I have the books and the narrations. Inexpensive way to get SOO much classical literature. If you want to get started on the classics, this would be a great purchase. I highly recommend getting the narrations as well. Certain books are easier to comprehend when they are read aloud.

There are lots of problems with the scanning, but for the price (!) this is a fantastic deal. It is an opportunity to skim or re-read books that once were part of my life (and a few I missed). Can't go wrong--there is little help in navigating, searching, etc. but what do you want for practically nothing. It is an entire library on your Kindle!

Fun book!! Some of the 50 I have already read, but currently reading Anna Karinena. I am kind of on a mission to read all the classics that I can. When they are on the Kindle, it is so easy, and these collections of 50 treat masterpieces, put them at your fingertips.I love this kind of a format in music so-called "greatest hits", and I love it with books as well.
