Good resource
Excellent book. An eye opener about air travel. I travel a lot for my job and was never aware of the amounts of takeovers in the air.
This book is terrible. I read a lot and this is one of the few books I wish I hadn't finished. The reviews are clearly fake. In case you need more, here are three reasons not to buy:+ There are basic typos on almost every other page. It's a +200 page book, couldn't they at least proofread it?+ The structure is painful. The author basically assembled a timeline of data and regurgitated it on the page. Makes for an incredibly jumpy and disconnected read.+ He misses the point. The author will go on and on about some specific detail (like the childhood home of a no-name government administrator), while failing to address major issues (like why the size of the program was cut in half). Mind-blowingly low levels of insight.
Up front: I did not complete the book. The rating is based on the first ten pages.Whether self-published or published through a large company, there is, IMO, no excuse for poor grammar, misspellings and bad punctuation in a book. The first time I read the word presidents' with the possessive apostrophe, and the reference was to more than one president with no possessiveness, I cringed. By the third time, I was practically chewing my finger nails (maybe a slight exaggeration). I plowed on to page 10, and plowing it was because it wasn't interesting writing and though written as non-fiction, it rang false to me, when I decided life is too short to waste my time.
Wow, what a great history lesson for anyone interested in aviation. Despite a few typos or grammatical errors, the research and history of the Air Marshal's was thorough and extensive. I found it to be highly interesting to learn how this branch of aviation security was founded, and the extensive training that the early air marshals had to go through. In this day of terrorism threats, and in light of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight, I can only say that the skies will be safer with more well trained air marshals on more flights. Perhaps some other countries that don't take these threats as seriously will take an opportunity to learn and create their own programs for the safety of their citizens and passengers who visit them.
I've just read Clay's book. It's not only a labor of love by a (now) former Federal Air Marshal, it's an extremely well-documented history of in-flight security and a tribute to many, otherwise unsung, dedicated federal law enforcement personnel. This book is long overdue. Throughout the last fifty some years, attempts to safeguard public air travel have proceeded by fits and starts. Each new iteration, from the original FAA Peace Officers to the current cadre of Federal Air Marshals, has had to reinvent the program virtually from scratch. Prior to Clay's book, no attempt was made to capture or codify the lessons learned by the many different programs. In his effort, Clay has created not just an outstanding work of history, but a reference on in-flight security. Full disclosure:I was a Customs Security Officer from back in the Sky Marshal days, who Clay interviewed during his exhaustive research.
Focus on history of Air Marshals vs examples of on board operations and case histories. Needed for my technology runs amok novel in progress.
I enjoyed this book! The author really did his research and provided a thorough history of threats against the aviation sector.The only part I laughed at was towards the end when the author was describing the current state of the Air Marshal Service. I think most FAMS in the field today see the TSA as a hindrance and would welcome being transferred to a legacy Federal Law Enforcement agency rather than a regulatory boondoggle such as the TSA.
