A doctors’ guide to entrepreneurship contains practical advice on everything from hiring and billing to insurance and patents.A Florida dermatologist and Internet startup veteran, Hacker believes that “to practice medicine successfully today, a doctor must be equally as versed in the art of business as he or she is in the art of medicine.” To that end, in this new edition of his first book, he gives medical students and established physicians all the information they could need to found a private practice and branch out into business ventures... He clearly enumerates the first steps: setting oneself up as a corporation, trademarking a practice name, choosing a matching URL, opening a line of credit (“the blood supply of your practice”), and choosing attorneys and insurance agents. The book is heavily informational, down to form numbers, specific regulations, telephone numbers, and Web addresses. Luckily, the text is broken up with subheads and repeated elements such as “Pearls” and “Pitfalls to Avoid,” as well as italicized “Stat Consults” from four contributing attorneys—whose expert opinion sections are so long they might almost be considered co-authors. About the Author
Steven M Hacker, MD was one of twelve students selected from a national pool to enter medical school early through the prestigious Junior Honors Medical Program. He graduated from University of Florida medical school. He spent two years training in internal medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Dr. Hacker returned to Gainesville and completed his dermatology residency at the University of Florida By the time he had completed all his training, he had published over twenty peer-reviewed medical articles in medical journals, and co-authored several textbook chapters in clinical medicine textbooks. As of the writing of this book, he has built and sold many well known companies and holds several patents for inventions in the fields of electrical engineering, chemical engineering and electromagnetic resonance theory. Twenty years ago, Dr. Hacker founded Skinstore.com (now owned by Walgreens). Skinstore was one of the first Internet sites to sell physician-recommended skin care products (cosmeceuticals) online. Skinstore grew to one of the biggest online skincare sites. In 2004, five years before President Obama started talking about electronic personal health records, Dr. Hacker created a personal health record company called PassportMD (now owned by Verisk Analytics). PassportMD was selected by Medicare for its personal health record pilot program. It was recognized as one of the top personal health record companies in 2008 by the leading electronic medical record industry trade show. Dr. Hacker negotiated marketing and partnership deals with Microsoft Healthvault and many other Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Hacker sold the company in 2009. In this book Dr. Hacker shares the lessons learned from both the mistakes and successes he had experienced in growing a medical practice and creating unrelated entrepreneurial ventures at the same time.

This is my first time eating a product on Amazon but this book is worthy of a review. I decided to purchase 3 books on the topic of the business of medicine, this being one of the three. It was my intention to have a book that was easy to read (and by easy I mean riveting and not drab), a book that allowed me to be concise in note taking, and most importantly to me, a book that was written from the perspective of a physician and his experiences. This book was that and more. The author was quick to tell you the necessary steps to take in forming your practice or joining a group/corporation. These details were straight forward and concise. He also highlights pitfalls he himself faced that you can avoid with his advice as well as successes he accomplished that he guides in order for you to do the same. Included are also legal excerpts from individuals who practice law in relation to medicine that are insightful. The author is also sure to include his own business initiatives which extended outside of just practicing as a physician. All in all this is just a great book and resource for any one looking to really get a feel for what's ahead and possibilities out there. I've just started my second book and am seeing a lack of what this book here offered but am hopeful that maybe things will pick up as I progress. This book is highly recommended and I plan to be referencing it and my notes taken from it often as I progress on.
Great book. Part I gives a great overview of how to start your own medical practice based on Hacker's experience as an entrepreneur. Should be noted, though, that Hacker does not discuss anything about creating a cash practice.Part II of the book discusses how to start and run your own business outside of medical practice. I purchased the book because of Part I, but Part II was a great read as well.To summarize, I think this book should be required reading in medical school to educate American physicians on how to be successful in running a practice. I'm content working where I'm at now, but should I ever decide to change locations, I'll refer to this book to guide my future practice.Thank you Dr. Hacker for taking the time to write this book!
I found this book to be quite informative. As with any topic, you can't simply rely on one book to give you ALL the information you need. I am using it mostly for opening a new medical practice. I also read Start Your Own Medical Practice: A Guide to All the Things They Don't Teach You in Medical School about Starting Your Own Practice, which is a different read and covers other areas. I have also read books on business structures, and plan to read a billing book as well, and any others that may be necessaryWhat I like about this book is that it is more recent, and healthcare is changing soo rapidly. It is an easy read, and covers a good deal of information. only Part 1 was useful for me, but nonetheless informative. I think it's not a bad buy for the money.
Medical school and post graduate training lack essential training in the business of medicine. The book is a great read for novices and experiencedpractioners.
