Beautiful color but interior images are mostly rudimentary sketches. I bought this to read about Chaco on my way out there and was disappointed that this is mostly an archaeological survey type of textbook. I don't mind the Encyclopedia style, but it didn't suite my needs as an average park goer with an interest in digging in a little deeper. I'd call Chaco's shop, which has tons of books, and ask which is best for this purpose if like, me, you want something of an overview that digs into the mysteries and theories and less about the actual bricks and mortar.
I have been fascinated by the Chaco culture and architecture for decades. Last September I decided to fulfill a dream and visit the Chaco Culture NP and other sites. I spent four days camping and hiking in Chaco Canyon. At night I read the Chaco Handbook and the next morning I headed off to hikes the trails to visit the sites in the park. I am not an expert, just an eager enthusiast. The Chaco Guidebook gave me insight into names and places, dates, technology, architecture, and so much more. I read the book from front to back took the knowledge gained with me while hiking every available trail. In will head back to Chaco next year and the Chaco Handbook will travel with me again.
This is a great handbook for anyone planning a visit to Chaco Canyon to view archeological sites. It lists topics alphabetically, so they are easy to look up while out there exploring. Up to date, and has numerous photos and floor plans of the pueblos found in the Canyon. The entries are archeological in content. I’m no archeologist but I have no problem understanding any of the entries.
Absolutely the BEST, most informative book on Chaco. This has many "secrets" about the Canyon that you just will not find elsewhere. Made the trip to the National Park that much better
The initial chapters of the book provide a wonderful, readable description of the archeology and people of Chaco Canyon. The highlighted words in the text are topics for fun exploration in the encyclopedic-like section in the 2nd half of the book. Reading this book and following the trail of word connections mirrors the excitement of discovery on a archeological site. Kudos to the talented authors who wrote this terrific handbook.
I did not understand this book is arranged in an encyclopedic format (a-z). Therew are no color photos except on the cover, but the information is good and very accesible.
Very informative. Excellent reference and overview of Chaco by one who helped uncover, literally, the mystery.
