The first thing that needs to happen, for most penguins, is that they “make nests before their chicks hatch.” Some penguins have burrows and some don’t build nests at all. In fact, some penguins “hold their eggs on their feet.” Female penguins lay one or two eggs and they “nest close together in a large colony.” If you look closely at the picture, you will see an emperor penguin keeping that egg warm. He makes sure that egg will hatch, but “other kinds of penguins take turns between males and females.” Of course someone has to find something to eat! It will soon be time for those eggs to hatch.From the inside of an egg, a baby chick uses an “egg tooth to crack its shell.” It can take a few days for a chick to emerge from its shell, but that egg tooth won’t last for long. Once hatched, the parents will protect the chick and will “take turns sitting on the nest to keep it safe and warm.” You can easily see that the young chick has feathers that will also help it stay warm. In this book you will learn how a chick is fed, how it grows down, what kinds of feathers they grow, how they “rely on their instincts to survive,” and you learn about many other things about young penguin chicks.This is a fascinating look at the penguin chick that the young reader will enjoy. This large print nonfiction book is prefaced by a table of contents that will set the stage for future nonfiction texts. Newly independent readers will be able to read this book with a bit of assistance. More difficult words such as “regurgitate” are highlighted in the text and defined in the glossary.
