Although the format is encyclopedic with alphabetical entries, its content falls far short. Its subtitle: The Essential Guide to the People, Places, Events & Symbols of the Order of the Temple is strictly a marketing ploy and borderline dishonest. There are few illustrations and pictures. What did the Templar gonafalon look like that the Master used to control a battle? No entry or picture. Since the Templars were a military order, one expects some entries on battles, weapons, seige engines, etc. They are non-existent other than a few dates in the chronology. The only redeeming feature of this book is its bibliography and recommended reading list.
not to many pics though-- but lots of information here-- did you now people made a black madonna statue? now thats always part of the history theres a pic here and thats interesting to--i should finish reading it-- got busy ha -owens
Extremely difficult to follow along with. It claims that by putting it in an alphabetical order that it will be easier to follow along with however it jumps from 1117 to 1250 to 1175 to 1300 back to 1120 and so forth. I would not recommend to readers who don't already know their Templar history. Not to mention the writer seems to trail off into run ons very often on the same thing over and over.
Was a little different than I expected but still very informational.
Although not as extensive as Napier's book, this is a good reference work. An excellent chronology is included. A stylish, attractive book and well-structured.

Dr. Ralls book is comprehensive on subjects related to the Templar myth and legend, but I would have enjoyed it more had the author simply written a historical examination of the Order that included all of the information in this book. It doesn't work as well for me as an encyclopedia, because in order to locate particular subjects (such as Templar banking practices and origins), you need to know the name of the related reference, which of course you may not. The information could have been organized by topic in chapters, which I would have found helpful.
