I saw this book on Amazon and got it from my local library to see if I wanted to buy a copy of my own. As an amateur photographer living in Northern CA, I was hoping to be inspired by this book. Sadly, very very few of the photographs inspired me. This book feels like the guy got an assignment to go photograph along the coast, and did so quickly, because so many of the photographs are midday lighting, so the colors are washed out. And a surprising number of the photos have focus issues. Except for the brief forward, there is no text, besides the very brief photo captions (which just indicate the general locale). There are so many better photo books of California, so save your money and look elsewhere.
The photographs are magnificent, and for that, I would give this book five stars. But otherwise, to me, it's a disappointment. There are no maps, which would have helped greatly to locate just where the photos are from. The captions are inadequate, and sometimes a bit misleading. The coast north of San Francisco basically gets a "lick and a promise," far less attention than the coast to the south, despite the fact that much of this part of the coast is absolutely magnificent. I requested this book as a Christmas present, but had i seen it before I requested it, I would not have done so. If you just want great photos and don't care that it is a far from adequate or satisfying portrait of the California coast, go for it. But otherwise, look elsewhere.
