I read many of the reviews for this book before I began writing my own here. I enjoyed every page of this honest and meaningful book about one woman's journey through a years' worth of Jewish holidays and festivals. I think this book should be on the reading list of every adult women's Bat Mitzvah study. And maybe men's adult Bar Mitzvah as well. Ms. Pogrebin is intent on finding the meaning and application of Jewish ritual in her present life. Yeah. Those of us that received Jewish education ("Hebrew School" which was neither Hebrew nor school) know that what we learned then is not relevant in our adult lives. Yes. It was important to go to a Hebrew School to learn the essentials. But really Hebrew school is the ticket to Bar and Bat Mitzvah. And once you have turned in your ticket for those events, your education ends. And really this is where your education should begin. Ms. Pogrebin beautifully tackled the essence of any religious dilemma: how do I incorporate religion into my life; assuming you want to do that in the first place. I loved the way she gave me the "Spark Notes" version of the holiday (the Hebrew school version we remember) but then talked about the meaning of the holiday beyond the myth. I loved the inclusion of the various scholars who helped her find her path. I loved her stories about her family and how they helped her and supported her through this year long journey. I loved how she educated me without being condescending. I know I am not the only Jewish person who cannot tell you the why's and wherefore of the 18 holidays presented in the book. But I really felt that she was talking to me as if we were sitting at the local coffeehouse and she was explaining her own experience with this journey. The bottom line is that this is THE book to read if you want to understand our Jewish traditions and how Ms. Pogrebin wanted to make them relevant to her present life.
This is a wonderful description of Judaism, and how it is practiced in different ways by Jews of different stripes but all part of klal yisrael---the whole Jewish community. Ms. Pogrebin explores the way others celebrate our common faith and with a truly open heart---something many people are simply unable to do. She describes what she experienced in a way that puts the reader right there with her, without judgment or condemnation of anything that she sees or hears for the first time. There are so many portions of this book that strike very close to home and her descriptions of what she drew from what she saw, heard and felt nearly put me in tears. So much of this book had special meaning when portions first appeared as essays in The Forward newspaper, but put together as a whole gives what she writes even greater meaning. I see this as a volume to which I will return over and over again.
I am not Jewish but always find it fascinating to understand more of the faith and how it ties into Christianity. This author is insightful, delightful, and many of her references dovetail with the experiences I had working for the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. Furthermore, she references a Rabbi who made a big impact on me when my husband died -- Naomi Levy who wrote To Begin Again. I also enjoy the many references to Rabbis who have differing views on the individual Jewish holidays. I particularly enjoyed the connections between Sukkot, Shemini Atzaret and Simchat Torah. A great read for all who want to understand more about this beautiful faith.
This book could serve as a primer for the curious .This is way more than Jewish Holidays For Dummies. What a rich exploration of the Jewish identity and soul. The author finds common threads that ties the holidays together as well as binds the Jewish people together( while certainly not ignoring the vast differences among them). Fortunately for her readers, she shares her personal journey with us with grace and humour . The first read was quick, the next will be savour ed
I learned so much from this book and particularly appreciated the author's insights, warmth and self-deprecating humor. It is particularly impressive that she was able to get so many respected scholars and rabbinical leaders to discuss the origins and meaning of the holidays with her. She has finally resolved the mystery of the holiday of Shemini Atzeret for me. I will use the book as a reference in the future and for an inspiration when I too wonder why I am fasting.
I am half jewish, but I was not raised as a jew. I always felt a tug, now I know what it is and I am learning much from this book.
Wonderful account of Jewish holidays with respect and humor. It greatly expanded my knowledge of a culture and religion I had only known a little bit about. I am enriched.
Beautifully written and researched, and the personal stories make this very engaging.
